Ambulance Victoria review – Update 5 (14 May 2021)

As we near the end of the research phase of our Independent review into workplace equality in Ambulance Victoria, site visits are underway, a workplace equality education program is being developed, and written submissions close later this month.

14 May 2021

I am pleased to provide the fifth update on the Commission’s Independent review into workplace equality in Ambulance Victoria and let you know about the progress of our work so far.

What’s happening with the review?
Over the past few weeks, my team has been out visiting Ambulance Victoria workplaces in Bacchus Marsh, Cowes, Cranbourne, Doncaster, Frankston, Karingal, Korumburra, Laverton North, Moe, Morwell, Port Melbourne and Traralgon. I know they’ve appreciated the opportunity to meet some of you in person, see where and how you work, and answer any questions about the review.

Over the coming weeks, the team will visit AV workplaces in Bendigo, Lismore, Mailors Flat, Maldon, Norlane and Warrnambool. (See here for more information).

We’re also continuing to undertake confidential interviews, with 114 interviews conducted as at 7 May. Given the high demand for interviews, registrations for confidential interviews are now closed. EOIs for focus groups also close today.

You can still contribute to the review through written submissions
If you would like to contribute to the review, but haven’t yet had the chance, you can make a confidential written submission until 31 May 2021. You can do this by using our online webform or by emailing the submission to AVreview@veohrc.vic.gov.au. A short guide to making a submission is available on our website.

Delivering education and training on workplace equality
Over the coming weeks, the Commission will design and deliver a tailored education program on workplace equality for AV’s Board of Directors, Executive Committee and Directors. This program will centre on building understanding and supporting capability to respond to workplace equality issues and awareness of responsibilities under the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.

A farewell from me
This will be my last update as the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner, as my term comes to an end in May. As I hand over to a new Commissioner, the team will continue their work delivering this review and embedding workplace equality across AV.

Thank you to everyone who has come forward to share their experiences and views. It has been my great privilege to meet some of you during the review. Your contribution is incredibly valuable and is supporting the Commission to understand the state of workplace equality in AV and will inform our findings and recommendations for change.

Take care

Kristen Hilton
Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner
