The Expert Advisory Group on discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment – Advising the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons – Aug 2015

The Commission recently provided a submission to the Expert Advisory Group to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, into the issues of discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment.

About the submission

This submission includes recommendations relating to policy and training and addressing the barriers to reporting for both victims and bystanders. These recommendations are made within the context of a broader framework of activities to address the key drivers of these behaviour.

There is specific evidence of the beneficial effects of promoting gender equality within the workplace. Strategies that focus on primary prevention help to address the key drivers of sexual harassment and discrimination before the problem occurs. To this end, this submission details a number of primary prevention recommendations and we urge the College of Surgeons to pay particular attention to these matters.

This submission also draws on previous research the Commission has undertaken into discrimination and sexual harassment, and the Commission’s current work on the Independent Review into Sex Discrimination, Sexual Harassment and Predatory Behaviour within Victoria Police.
