Australian Human Rights Commission OPCAT Implementation in Australia Consultation – Stage 2 – Sep 2018

In September 2018, the Commission provided a submission to the second stage of the Australian Human Rights Commission consultation regarding the implementation of the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT) in Australia.

About the submission

Effectively implemented, OPCAT will assist in the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT) by preventing the mistreatment of people in closed environments. Our submission outlines a model for best practice implementation of OPCAT in Australia, and sets out a process for identifying the most urgent risks of harm within Australian detention settings.
