Find out more about trans rights at Victorian Law Week (17-23 May)

Organised by Victoria Law Foundation, Victorian Law Week is for everyday Victorians who want to access vital and practical information about their legal rights and responsibilities. This year, we’ll be delivering two webinars focused on the rights of trans and gender-diverse people at work and in sport.

Most of this year’s events will be delivered remotely, allowing you to find the legal information you need and attend events from your home. However, some events will be delivered face-to-face with COVID-19 precautions put in place, alongside the online delivery of free legal advice over the phone, topical panel discussions via webinar, virtual tours, workshops and much more. Law Week is on from 17 to 23 May 2021. The Commission will deliver two webinars as part of Law Week 2021.

Trans and gender diverse inclusion in sport: theory to practice (Webinar)

All people should feel safe and included when playing sport and sporting organisations need to be inclusive of trans and gender diverse people. This webinar will explain how to apply the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission’s Guideline on Trans and Gender Diversity in Sport.

The guideline examines the rights of trans and gender diverse people, and the obligations on sporting organisations to uphold those rights. It will look at how to promote respectful interaction between athletes, coaches, volunteers and spectators when engaging with trans and gender diverse people.

The webinar will:

  • explain importance of trans and gender diverse inclusion in sport
  • clarify the rights and duties outlined in the Commission’s guideline for sporting organisations
  • discuss constructive action that sporting organisations can take to be more inclusive.

Transgender people at work: preventing gender identity discrimination (Webinar)

Work should be a safe and inclusive place where everyone is respected. However, trans and gender diverse people experience significant levels of discrimination in the workplace.

The webinar will:

  • build awareness of the rights of workers to be free from discrimination on the basis of their sex, gender identity, sexual orientation and sex characteristics
  • clarify the duties of employers outlined in the Commission’s guideline
  • discuss practical action that workplaces can take to prevent and respond to workplace discrimination of trans and gender diverse workers.
