Statement: Honouring the life and contribution of former Board Chair, Fiona Smith

On the occasion of today’s memorial service for the late Fiona Smith, the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission wishes to pay tribute to her significant service to the State of Victoria and her contributions to social justice and human rights.

Fiona was a lawyer and advocate, a person of enormous heart, courage and intellect, who particularly championed rights, gender equality and nature.

Fiona served as Chairperson for the Victorian Equal Opportunity Commission of Victoria from 2003-2008, during which time she oversaw the introduction of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act.

In 2003, Fiona was awarded the Centenary Medal for her contribution to the Victorian justice system, and was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll in 2012 in recognition of her considerable contributions.

The community is better off for the significant contributions made by Fiona Smith across her life, and we are grateful.
