For many First Nations people, 26 January is a reminder of the devastating impacts of colonisation and dispossession

Past injustices, the loss of many lives and the erosion of culture since colonisation mark 26 January as a day of mourning for many First Nations communities.

26 January 2024

In recent years, there’s been a growing acknowledgement that, rather than a day of celebration, this date is layered with pain and sadness for First Nations people. This date reminds us that this land was never ceded. It also reminds us that the legacy of colonisation and dispossession continues to have wide-ranging impacts on First Nations communities today.

At the Victorian Equal and Human Rights Commission, we recognise the resilience of First Nations communities, and the strength of their culture and identity which have been the catalyst for much important progress on human rights issues in this state, including criminal justice reform and land rights. We share an ongoing commitment to supporting self-determination and ensuring First Nations people have the right to decide for themselves how to manage their lands, their communities and their lives.
