News: 26 January is a time for us to reach a shared understanding of past injustices

On 26 January, we acknowledge the loss, pain and trauma of First Nations people caused by the dispossession of their land and the erosion of their cultures.

For many First Nations people, 26 January is a day of grief and mourning. The date reminds us that this land was stolen but never ceded. It is a time for all of us to reflect and reach a shared understanding of how past injustices have impacted First Nations people over generations.

First Nations people have cared for this land as the world’s oldest continuous living culture. They have played – and continue to play – a pivotal role in Australia’s culture, history and future. The strength, resilience and pride of First Nations people continues to drive progress on many important human rights issues in this country, from criminal justice reform to land rights.

At the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, we are committed to ensuring First Nations people have the right to decide for themselves how to manage their lands, their communities and their lives.

This includes working with First Nations community leaders and the First Peoples’ Assembly to develop a shared understanding of the right to self-determination. We see the need for reform to the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities to create a legislative right to self-determination.

Today, as we do every day, we acknowledge that this always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
