Inquiry into a Human Rights Act in Queensland – Apr 2016
The Commission provided a submission to the Queensland Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee inquiry into whether it is appropriate and desirable to legislate for a Human Rights Act in Queensland, other than through a constitutionally entrenched model.
About the submission
The Commission submitted that a Human Rights Act for Queensland would serve to better protect and promote the human rights of people in Queensland. The Commission recommended that it could be legislated in an Act of Parliament like the Charter. The Charter has been an effective tool, particularly for ensuring that human rights are embedded in government policy and practice, and in the development and drafting of legislation. The Commission also recommended that lessons learned from the Victorian experience should be taken into account where legislating and implementing a Human Rights Act for Queensland.
