On January 26, we reflect on the strength of First Peoples against the ongoing impacts of colonisation and dispossession
Past injustices, loss and sadness mark January 26 as a Day of Mourning for many First Peoples and we acknowledge the resilience of communities.
For many First Peoples, and many allies, 26 January is a Day of Mourning.
On January 26, we are reminded of the truth of our history – that this land was never ceded and the trauma of past injustices has been enduring for First Peoples. The day reminds us that this legacy of colonisation and dispossession continues to have deep and wide-ranging impacts on First Peoples today and that First Peoples are disproportionately affected by prejudice and hate.
The Victorian Equal and Human Rights Commission proudly celebrates the strength, pride and resilience of First Peoples. The oldest continuous cultures in the world have shaped a strong identity, one which has seen First Peoples drive critical change for human rights issues in this state, including criminal justice reform, land rights, truth-telling and Treaty. We acknowledge the unwavering dedication of First Peoples who have fought for the recognition of their rights, despite facing racism, oppression and marginalisation.
We share an ongoing commitment to supporting self-determination so that First Peoples have the right to decide for themselves how to manage their lands, their communities and their lives. We proudly support truth-telling and Treaty in Victoria and the invaluable opportunity these processes present to create a better shared future for all Victorians, based on fairness, equality and respect.
