Commission announces new Board Chair

Taryn Lee has been appointed the new Chair of the Commission’s Board, becoming the first Aboriginal woman to hold the position

Following five years of dedicated and outstanding leadership as Chair of the Commission’s Board, the Commission recently said farewell to Moana Weir as she moved on to become Victoria’s inaugural Local Jobs First Commissioner.

The Commission is pleased to now announce that Taryn Lee has been appointed as  the Commission’s new Chair, becoming the first Aboriginal woman to fulfill the role.

Taryn has served on the Commission’s Board since 2020, however she has a long history with the Commission stretching back some fifteen years to when she worked at the Commission across our Dispute Resolution, Education and Policy branches.  During this time she also completed a MA in Human Rights at the University of London, before going on to hold a range of senior executive roles across the VPS, and serve on a number of Boards. Taryn is the current General Manager, Social Impact and Policy at Collingwood Football Club and Parks Victoria Board Member.

A message from our outgoing Chair, Moana Weir:

It has been an absolute privilege to have served on the Board of the Commission for the last 7 years, 5 and a half of which were spent as Chair. I am proud of the invaluable work the Commission has delivered in that time, in working to ensure equality, and that all Victorians are treated with fairness, dignity and respect.

I am grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to work together with Ro Allen, our Commissioner, as well as our former Commissioners Kate Jenkins and Kristen Hilton, and my fellow directors of the Commission Board. I would like to thank each of them, and every member of the Commission team for their support and their commitment and dedication to our work.

Having spent the last two years with Taryn on the Board I know that she will be an outstanding Chair. I have no doubt that with Taryn as Chair together with Ro Allen our Commissioner at the helm, the Commission is well placed to continue to respond to the challenges and opportunities that arise in the future.

A message from our incoming Chair, Taryn Lee:

As I step into the role of Commission Chair, I want to pay tribute to the leadership and dedication of the former Chair, Moana Weir. I have learnt a lot from Moana during our time on the Board and hope to do justice to her legacy and leadership over the course of my term. I also want to acknowledge my fellow Board Directors and thank them for their ongoing support, collectively your efforts have ensured that the organisation is in very good shape going forward.

I’m excited about working with Ro Allen and everyone at the Commission into the future – the work to promote rights and protections for our communities is a responsibility I don’t take lightly, and I feel proud that I can be a part of an organisation that reflects the needs and aspirations of many great communities in Victoria.
