Rights and Responsibilities 2014 Submission to the Australian Human Rights Commission – Oct 2014

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the Australian Human Rights Commission’s consultation on rights and responsibilities.

About the submission

The consultation seeks to identify restrictions on rights and freedoms that are disproportionate to the harm being prevented, and to identify where people are advancing their rights and freedoms through community-based and voluntary programs. We welcome these consultations and the community engagement they bring with them on human rights issues in Australia today.

The Commission makes this submission to provide background information about the rights protections in Victoria to assist in this broad discussion.

We pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission recognises the injustice resulting from the colonial invasion and occupation of First Peoples’ territories and the Yoorrook Justice Commission’s findings of genocide, crimes against humanity and denial of freedoms.
