Department of Justice and Regulation’s consultation on the Victoria Police Restorative Engagement and Redress Scheme – May 2017

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (the Commission) has provided a submission to the Department of Justice and Regulation’s consultation on the Victoria Police Restorative Engagement and Redress Scheme.

About the submission

In December 2015 the Commission published its first phase report for the Independent review of sex discrimination and sexual harassment, including predatory behaviour, in Victoria Police (the Review).

Recommendation 1 of the Review was that Victoria Police undertake work to deliver a redress scheme and public acknowledgement of harm. The Commission worked with Victoria Police to deliver a small-scale restorative engagement scheme for participants from the Review who had suffered and disclosed harm during the review process.

Since its release the Commission has provided advice and assistance to Victoria Police in the implementation of the Review’s recommendations. The Commission is now undertaking the first of two audits of Victoria Police’s progress against the recommendations, and will release its first audit in August/September 2017.
