Victorian Law Week 2022 (16–22 May)

This session focuses on reasonable accommodations for parents and carers at work.

Everyone has the right to participate equally at work. For some people, this requires adjustments to perform the requirements of their role. The session will explore what the law says about reasonable accommodations for parents and carers in the workplace, and provides practical preventative actions that can be taken to avoid discrimination against parents and carers.

This is a panel event that answers the question: ‘Why do we need a ban on change and suppression (conversion) practices?’

Our panellists are:

John Capper – a theological educator and ordained Anglican minister who is engaged in governance and leadership in a number of higher education and school contexts. John has grown in passion as an advocate for equality through research and experience in the past two decades.

Nicole Conner – a narrative therapist at Defining Stories and has thirty years of experience of working in spiritual care and not-for-profit organisations. Nicole has specialist experience in religious trauma recovery and resilience training with narrative practices informing her work as an organisational well-being consultant and supervisor.

Rida Aleem Khan – a writer and public speaker with a keen interest in multiculturalism. Rida is proud of her ‘Sufi Muslim Balouch’ heritage and wants to give a voice to multicultural communities, minority groups, migrants, refugees, and youth. Rida is the Youth Chair at Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia.

Ro Allen, the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner will host this event.

The panel will

• discuss why this new law was needed
• identify the practices that are now illegal
• shed light on how you can prevent or respond.

In February 2022, VCAT published advice about when and how an appointed guardian can authorise the use of forcible physical restraint in order to administer medication to people under their guardianship.

The advice was provided in response to a request from the Office of the Public Advocate, and after a hearing on the issues that included the Attorney-General, the Department of Health and the Commission.

This webinar will explore:

• why the Office of the Public Advocate sought VCAT’s advice regarding their scope of powers
• a brief background of the case and advice
• any potential far-reaching consequences of the advice, and
• the practice implications of VCAT’s advice for guardians and those under guardianship orders.
